Southern Sierra Council Camps

Get Ready for Camp Kern in 2010!

With an excellent program in place and the 100th Anniversary of Scouting celebration in full swing, Camp Kern is ready and prepared to provide an exciting summer adventure for your Troop in 2010!

The first week of Scout camp is just around the corner. As you prepare to make your trip there are a few things we would like for you to keep in mind for your arrival:

We ask that you plan on being at the scout dock (on the northwest side of Huntington Lake) no later than 2:30 PM. We will begin shipping troops and their luggage over to camp at this time. We will take troops to camp in the order in which they arrive to the scout dock. We ask for your help in this matter by simply communicating with other troop leaders, being courteous and honest, and recognizing the order in which your troop arrived.

We will have a couple of staff members at the scout dock at 2:00 PM in order to organize the departure. They will be able to answer any questions you might have, and will be happy to assist you in any way possible.

In order to make check-in as smooth as possible, we ask that one adult have all of the needed paperwork on his/her person. Adults with paperwork will head over to camp on the first barge back to camp in order to expedite the process.

If your troop is running behind schedule, please let us know by calling the camp program office (559) 893-3387.

A Message from our Camp Director:

June 8, 2010

Dear Scoutmasters,

Thanks for expressing your concerns about the meal change at Camp Kern this summer; the feedback has been both positive and negative. As a camp administration we felt that having the Scouts prepare lunch in their campsite would allow them the chance to work more together and increase their outdoor cooking skills and knowledge. We also felt that it was important to be in line with the BSA national inspection requirements that call for summer camps to provide an opportunity for Scouts to prepare and eat at least three meals in the outdoors during the camp week.

After listening to opinions expressed by Scoutmasters we have decided that because this new policy was implemented in the last few months and because many people had signed up and paid with the intention that the meals would be provided it would not be fair to change the program this late into the year. With that said, we are going to be serving all meals to the campers during the 2010 camping season. We will not be expecting campers to make lunch in their campsites.

Yours in Scouting,

Jordan Holloman
